The Dayton Art Institute is the Miami Valley’s premier fine art museum, where we create unforgettable art experiences that connect people to creativity, culture and community.
We began in 1919 as the Dayton Museum of Arts, starting as a small art school with a growing collection and a mission rooted in education and creativity. By 1927, we became the Dayton Art Institute, reflecting our expanding role in the cultural life of the region.
Thanks to a transformational $2 million gift from Julia Shaw Patterson Carnell, construction soon began on the museum’s beautiful Italian Renaissance-inspired home overlooking downtown Dayton. Designed by renowned architect Edward B. Green, the landmark building opened in 1930 and remains one of the city’s most recognizable cultural destinations.
Today, we are home to more than 28,000 artworks with areas of focus in African, American, Ancient Americas, Antiquities, Asian, Contemporary, European, Glass, Photography, Textiles and Works on Paper. We also offer rotating exhibitions, engaging programs and the Lange Family Experiencenter, where families can explore and create together.
