In most of her artworks, including this photograph, Sherman is both the model and photographer. She alters her appearance with the aid of makeup, costumes and prosthetics to create a range of personas. Through this construction, Sherman challenges traditional portraiture and how society identifies and values women.
Sherman is one of the most influential contemporary photographers. Her work, alongside fellow Picture Generation artists Laurie Simmons and Barbara Kruger, challenges gender stereotypes and how society defines women’s roles through various media.
