About the Art

Van Ruisdael was one of the premier artists of 17th-century Dutch landscape painting. His most frequent subjects are dramatic images of mountainous regions, wind-blown trees, rushing streams and waterfalls, as found here. Note the fine details throughout, including figures crossing a bridge in the middle ground and birds in the sky beneath the swiftly moving clouds.
