About the Art

Combining painting, calligraphy and poetry, this work merges the various interests of Kuncan, a Zen Buddhist monk, painter and poet. The composition encourages the eye to wander up and down, between the majestic mountains and the small person at the bottom.

The lengthy poetic inscription complements the scene, making a comparison between nature’s abundance, happiness and good government—possibly an indirect criticism of the new Qing dynasty that had just risen to power.
