Hizen province on the southern island of Kyushu was the center of porcelain production in Japan during the 1600s and 1700s. This included Nabeshima wares, named after the Nabeshima clan, who established kilns for producing high-quality ceramics with refined decoration, often in underglaze blue. Unlike other porcelain meant for the public, Nabeshima was restricted to ruling elites.
