Eichholtz was a leading portraitist in Philadelphia. He never had formal art training, although Thomas Sully and Gilbert Stuart were encouraging influences. This recently conserved work is a companion to The Ragan Sisters, 1818, at the National Gallery of Art, Washington, D.C.
