Veterans Day Program
Working in partnership with Stivers School for the Arts, the museum will offer a special program for veterans on Veterans Day, Friday, November 11. From 5:00 - 8:00 p.m., all veterans and one guest will receive free admission to the special exhibition American Chronicles: The Art of Norman Rockwell.
The program focuses on Norman Rockwell’s iconic works, the Four Freedoms, on view in American Chronicles. These four works reflect Rockwell’s interpretation of President Franklin Delano Roosevelt’s speech to congress in January 1941, in which he articulated his vision for a postwar world founded on four basic human freedoms: freedom of speech, freedom of religion, freedom from want and freedom from fear. This year marks the 70th anniversary of this speech.
Under the direction of Stivers history teacher Bridget Federspiel, 140 9th and 10th grade students from Stivers interviewed 30 World War II veterans. The video interviews will be edited into 30 to 60 second clips and interwoven with music, the original FDR speech and students’ reactions and reflections. As part of the Veterans Day Program, the finished piece will be presented in the museum’s NCR Renaissance Auditorium at 5:00 p.m., and all World War II veterans will be honored at that time.
The Dayton Art Institute will also offer a museum membership discount to both veterans and active-duty military on November 11. Veterans and active-duty military will receive $10 off any new membership, or the renewal of a current membership expiring before December 31, 2011, if purchased in person at the museum on November 11. Museum members receive free admission to special exhibitions, Vectren Just Jazz performances, and many other special events and programs at the museum, as well as discounts at The Museum Store and the museum’s Café.
