Romanticism, an art movement and style that flourished during the nineteenth century, has little to do with things that are commonly thought of as romantic. Romantic artists didn’t have one particular style, but rejected the cool reasoning of classicism and emphasized emotions painted in a bold dramatic manner. Romanticism wasn’t strictly a visual-arts movement, but included the work of writers, such as Mary Shelley and William Wordsworth, and musicians, including Beethoven and Franz Schubert. The tour will compare and contrast painting, literature and music from the nineteenth century with works from the twentieth century. In the galleries, students will be involved in a variety of activities, including writing responses to a variety of art forms. In the studio, they will use mixed media to create and embellish a journal to hold their written responses.
