FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE CONTACT: Dona Vella (937) 223-5277 ext. 243 The Dayton Art Institute Exhibits Artwork of Local College Students April 13, 2009 (DAYTON, OHIO) – The Dayton Art Institute will display artwork by four area college students selected for the Yeck College Artist Fellowship, one of three programs made possible by The Dorothy and Bill Yeck Educational Endowment. Students selected for this year’s fellowship are: Nick Scrimenti, Miami University; Cynthia Harrold, Central State University; Emily Davidson, Art Academy of Cincinnati; and Katy Nelson, Wright State University. Each of these students created a new body of work specifically for The Dayton Art Institute’s Regional Artists Gallery. Nick Scrimenti is a printmaker attending Miami University. Scrimenti’s work includes figurative, illustrative and abstract imagery. His work is a biographical or personal statement about people or issues such as financial and social problems. He creates characters that represent people that he has surrounded himself with in recent years. He does not intend for the viewer to take these characters or his underlying theme too seriously; therefore he tries to make his work playful and comical. Sculpture major Cynthia Harrold attends Central State University. As a ceramist, the earth’s natural materials are her inspiration. Her culture and life experiences deeply influence her work. Harrold’s goal is to encourage others to look beyond outer appearances and to recognize the inner beauty of the human race. Emily Davidson is a painter from the Art Academy of Cincinnati. Davidson’s paintings depict objects and manufactured spaces, elements of romantic landscape and fragments of personal memory. Painted loosely, in part from digital photograph, the paintings compare the act of consuming, whether consumption of products or images, to the splendor of viewing an expansive landscape. Katy Nelson is sculpture major who attends Wright State University. Nelson uses molds for the construction of her ceramics, then individualizes each piece by adding decorative elements. The repetitive forms and elements used in the creation of this series reflect her ideas about mass production and fashion. Works by the 2009 Yeck College Artist Fellows are on view in The Dayton Art Institute’s Regional Artists Gallery from April 18 to August 23, 2009. Admission is free. For more information about the Yeck College Artists Fellowship program, call (937) 223-5277, ext. 335, or e-mail mwhitley@daytonartinstitute.org.
