The Dayton Art Institute is one of the Miami Valley's premier fine art museums, housed in Dayton's best-known landmark, an historic 1930 Italian Renaissance-inspired building in downtown Dayton, overlooking the Great Miami River.

LOCATION

In the historic Grafton Hills neighborhood, north of the river in downtown Dayton and approximately 3 minutes from the business district. The museum is easily accessible from Interstate 75 and approximately 15 minutes from Dayton International Airport.

Open Tuesday - Saturday, 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.
Sunday, Noon to 4:00 p.m.
Extended hours on Thursdays until 8:00 p.m.

Closed Mondays and on Easter Sunday, Fourth of July, Thanksgiving, Christmas Day, and New Year's Day

ADMISSION

General admission is FREE, courtesy of the Chase Free Admission Endowment Fund. Most special exhibitions and events carry an admission fee.

COLLECTION & HIGHLIGHTS

The Dayton Art Institute has an encyclopedic permanent collection with more than 26,000 objects spanning 5,000 years of art history. In its most recent re-accreditation by the American Association of Museums, the Collection was rated as “superb in quality” with recent acquisitions termed “excellent.” Highlights include:

TOURS

Docent-led tours of the museum’s collection and special exhibitions are available on Thursdays at 2:00 p.m. Docent-led tours are not available on holidays or for special exhibitions during the last three weeks. In addition, the SmARTour, a self-guided audio tour containing information on selected works, is available FREE of charge at the Visitor Services Desk.

GROUP TOURS & PACKAGES

Docent-led school and adult group tours may be scheduled through the museum’s Tour Scheduler at ext. 337. Tours of special exhibitions require the purchase of special exhibition tickets. Adult groups may also add on a meal as part of their group package.

FAMILIES

The museum offers a variety of programs for families including: the EXPERIENCENTER, a hands-on interactive gallery; ProLiance Energy Museum Kids Club; art classes; After-School Club; special events. VISITOR AMENITIES

CAFÉ MONET by Elegant Fare
Open for lunch,Tuesday - Saturday, 11:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m., and Sunday, noon to 2:30 p.m. Cafe Monet features reasonably priced gourmet soups, salads, sandwiches, desserts and beverages.

THE MUSEUM STORE
Open during museum hours. Art gifts, books, Dayton Art Institute momentos, greeting cards.


PHOTOGRAPHY
Non-commercial photography is permitted of the museum’s permanent collection (inside and outside). All photographs must be for private, personal use. Photography is not permitted inside the special exhibition or of special exhibition works of art displayed throughout the museum.

No flashes, tripods or video cameras allowed inside the museum.

Commercial photography must be pre-approved by the museum’s Registration Department and the Communications Department. Direct questions to the Chief Registrar at ext. 330.

MEMBERSHIP

Annual memberships to The Dayton Art Institute offer many benefits: free admission to special exhibitions and monthly events, discount in The Museum Store and Café Monet, subscription to quarterly newsletter and more. Annual membership rates begin at $40 for individuals and $60 for families. To become a member, please contact the Membership Department at ext. 235.

ACCESSIBILITY

The museum facilities are fully accessible to physically challenged persons.

PARKING

A free parking lot is adjacent to the museum building. Additional public parking is available in downtown Dayton, just a 5-minute bus ride from The Dayton Art Institute.

DIRECTIONS

From the South: Take I-75 to the First Street/Salem Avenue exit (53B). Turn left at the light onto Salem Avenue and cross the bridge. At the light, turn right on Riverview Avenue. Proceed three blocks and turn left, up the hill, onto Belmonte Park North. The Dayton Art Institute and parking are on the right.

From the North: Take I-75 to the Main Street exit. Turn left at the light onto Main Street (Route 48). At the fourth light, turn right onto Riverview Avenue. Go four blocks to the T-intersection of Riverview and Forest, directly in front of the museum. Turn left to continue on Riverview and take the first right onto Belmonte Park North. The Dayton Art Institute and parking are on the right.
