Open Positions


Curator or Associate Curator of Asian Art

The Dayton Art Institute (DAI) seeks a highly qualified museum professional to serve as the Curator or Associate Curator (title commensurate with experience) of Asian art.

The DAI's extraordinary collection of over 2,000 Asian works includes such treasures as the Ming dynasty temple permanently installed in the Patterson - Kettering Wing of Asian Art. The East Asian collection includes Indian, Tibetan, Chinese, Korean, Japanese and Southeast Asian art. The West Asian collection includes Persian, Near Eastern and Islamic Art. The DAI's collection of Japanese art contains one of the world's largest collections of rare menuki (sword fittings) and the Korean collection includes some of the best examples of Korean celadon outside of Korea.

In recent years new acquisitions have focused on the areas of paintings and bronzes, including A Chinese bronze Gu vessel of western Shou dynasty, landscape paintings by Lan Ying and Lan Shen, of the 17th century, and most recently a painting by Huang Yingchen (Chinese, active 17th century) depicting the Tengwang Pavilion, dated 1670.

Primary responsibilities include developing and overseeing the safekeeping of diverse Asian art collections; developing exhibitions and publications that enhance understanding of and appreciation for Asian art; collections development; permanent collection and special exhibition installations; publications and programming; cultivating donors; developing and monitoring project budgets; writing grants for ongoing and special projects, and interpreting Asian art to multiple audiences through diverse media.

Qualifications
The ideal candidate will possess a Master’s degree (M.A.) in Asian Art History or Asian Studies, Ph.D. preferred; three to five years of professional work experience in a museum or related education/research organization. In addition, a distinguished record of research, exhibition development and publication for both in-house and international loan exhibitions, and writing catalogue essays are strongly preferred. Must possess knowledge of the standards and ethics related to the collection and exhibition of Asian Art.

Excellent managerial, interpersonal, written and verbal communication skills. Strong English language skills for educational lectures and docent training; ability to read and speak Asian language. Ability to work independently as well as collaboratively; and an ability to establish and maintain effective working relationship with staff, trustees, volunteers, donors, visitors, collectors, professional colleagues and other members of the museum community.

Assistant Preparator

The Dayton Art Institute is seeking a full-time Assistant Preparator to assist the Chief Preparator/Exhibition Designer in the planning and performing of all art preparation activities for the museum including but not limited to packing, handling and installing works of art, art storage and gallery maintenance.

Specific duties include art handling, display, crating, moving and shipping of individual works of art, special exhibitions and related exhibition materials; maintaining exhibitions and displays including humidity and temperature readings in all galleries and storage areas, checking and maintaining correct lighting in galleries, cleaning and dusting works of art on display in the galleries (including frames, mounts, pedestals and vitrines); matting, framing and mount making; constructing crates; and assisting contract photographers with special projects and requirements, including setting up and moving art to and from photography work areas.

Qualifications
Bachelor's degree (B. A.) in art history, studio art, museum studies or a related field; minimum of one year art handling experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience.

Knowledge of standards and procedures for art handling and security in a museum or similar institution environment preferred. Knowledge of basic carpentry tools and machinery; ability to build high-quality exhibition furniture, installation components, and crates; knowledge of materials used in the care and handling of works of art. Ability to work as a team player in a multidisciplinary arts organization. Excellent interpersonal skills, exceptional resourcefulness and flexibility; display good judgment; problem solving, exercise tact and diplomacy at all times. Must be organized as well as flexible. This position requires a valid driver’s license and the ability to regularly lift and/or move up to 75 pounds and climb ladders.

Student Internship Program

The Dayton Art Institute can provide a wide variety of educational and professional training opportunities for students interested in a museum career. As the premier arts institution in the Miami Valley, we have established a national and international reputation for our collection, exhibition, and educational programs. Our collections include American, African, Asian, European, Oceanic, and pre-Columbian art, with curators in each of these areas as well as photography and textiles. The exhibition program features major projects in all of these areas, as well as other exhibitions on cultures from elsewhere in the world. The educational programs reach tens of thousands of children, students, and adults from throughout the Miami Valley each year. In addition, we have received national awards for our educational programs for the visually impaired.

PURPOSE
The Art Institute’s Student Internship Program is intended to provide students with first hand professional experiences in a museum setting and an opportunity to become familiar with typical art museum programs and activities. Internships are designed primarily for undergraduate, graduate, and postdoctoral students. These non-paid internships are typically available in the Curatorial, Education, Registration, Exhibition Design and Preparation, Library and Marketing departments. Students serve as an assistant to mid- and senior level museum staff members. Students are introduced to the museum’s activities as a whole as well as the individual department’s regular activities. The museum trains the students to carry out tasks assigned to them by department staff, thus providing the intern with valuable experience while at the same time the intern contributes to the museum’s ongoing activities and programs.

Although internships are non-paid positions, we seek to provide the student with projects relevant to the student’s professional goals, making the best use of the student’s knowledge and interests. Academic credit may be received depending on the intern’s college program.

DURATION OF INTERNSHIP
After successfully completing a formal application and interview, once accepted, interns are placed within a department based on their educational background and career goals. Internships are designed to last at least 2 weeks and typically no more than 12 weeks or the equivalent of a school term or semester. Interns are expected to work 8 to 10 hours per week, or as otherwise indicated. Schedules are arranged to meet both the needs of the student and the museum. Applications should be made 30 days prior to the proposed starting date or as soon as possible.

EXPECTATIONS
1. Interns will have basic research, writing, and computer skills.


2. Interns will maintain a regular schedule, be punctual, and work effectively in a professional manner.


3. Interns will be willing to take on a variety of tasks as determined by the supervising staff.


4. Interns will be able to comfortably interact with visitors to the museum.


5. Interns will attend various meetings throughout the museum as determined

by the supervising staff member.


6. Interns will be willing to work with people of all ages if the project requires.
