Rembrandt Lecture Series

Rembrandt and the Golden Age in Holland
Monday mornings from 10:15-11:30 a.m.,

Dr. Marybeth Carlson, professor of history at the University of Dayton, along with art historian Dr. Roger Crum will present a series of four lectures covering the art of Rembrandt and the Dutch masters within the context of seventeenth century life in Holland, known as the Golden Age.

Matters of Taste, Food and Drink in Seventeenth-Century Dutch Art and Life
NCR Renaissance Auditorium

Food historian Peter G. Rose, co-author of Matters of Taste, Food and Drink in Seventeenth-Century Dutch Art and Life, will discuss the tradition and symbolism of food in Dutch painting. Join us following the lecture for the rare opportunity to watch Portland artist Margret Short paint a still life in the techniques of the Old Masters while you sample traditional Dutch treats, including cheeses, cookies, coffee and tea. Rembrandt 100 Years Ago and Today: A Picture of Change
Speaker:  Dr. Catherine Scallen

Dr. Catherine Scallen, associate professor of art history at Case Western Reserve University, is a specialist in Northern Baroque art, with an emphasis on the art of Rembrandt. A Princeton graduate, she recently published Rembrandt, Reputation, and the Practice of Connoisseurship.

Rembrandt and the Dutch Republic
NCR Renaissance Auditorium

Dr. Arthur Wheelock, curator of Northern Baroque Painting at the National Gallery of Art in Washington, D.C., is an expert on seventeenth-century Dutch and Flemish art. Join us for a discussion on how Rembrandt's paintings, prints and drawings reflect not only Dutch optimism and pride in the land and its people, but the spiritual essence and moral complexity of life, as is apparent in his painted portraits and depictions of stories from the Bible and mythology.

Among the exhibitions Professor Wheelock has organized for the National Gallery are: Gods, Saints and Heroes: Dutch Painting in the Age of Rembrandt; Dutch Painting of the Golden Age from the Royal Picture Gallery, Mauritshuis; Frans Hals, Anthony Van Dyck, Johannes Vermeer, and Jan Steen: Painter and Storyteller.
