The Soul Unbound
The photographs of Jane Reece
This exhibition of nearly 250 black and white photographs
by acclaimed Dayton photographer Jane Reece (1868-1961) will be the first
major retrospective of Reece's work since the 1963 memorial exhibition,
"The Wonderful World of Photography," held at The Dayton Art
Institute. Born in West Jefferson, Ohio, Reece made Dayton her home, working
there from the first decade of this century to the 1940s when her failing
eyesight, ill health and declining finances forced her to abandon her
art. Reece was one of the important American regional photographers to
work outside the major artistic centers of New York, San Francisco and
Los Angeles. Throughout the 1920s and 1930s, Reece attained a national
and international reputation for her photographs made in the "Pictorialist"
style, which was popular during the first quarter of the 20th century.
In 1952, Reece donated her vast collection of nearly 400 Salon prints
to The Dayton Art Institute.
Catalogue available: $29.95 (soft cover) or $39.95
(hard cover) plus shipping & handling.
This exhibition was organized by The Dayton Art Institute
and presented by Merrill-Lynch and Airtouch Cellular.
