THE HAROLD W. SHAW PRE-COLUMBIAN
ART COLLECTION features gold, silver, jade, stone and ceramic works from
ancient Meso-America and South America. Spanning more than a thousand
years, the Shaw Collection is highlighted by works of the ancient Maya,
Aztec, Chimu, Nayarit, Olmec, and Colima peoples.
The Shaw Collection was assembled by the late Harold
W. Shaw during the 1960s and 1970s. Although the Shaws worked with some
of the most prominent dealers of pre-Columbian art, it was the eye of
the collector that assembled this magnificent and very personal collection.
Among the more than 70 works included in this exhibition
are a miniature gold jaguar figurine from Puerto Gonzales, a Mayan green
jade necklace and matching earplugs from ancient Mexico, a splendid painted
Mayan vase, and a stunning lintel from a Mayan temple at Yaxchilan.
