2010-2011 Season

The Claremont Trio
Back for their fifth Vanguard appearance come those true friends, the lovely twins Emily and Julia Bruskin (violin and cello), and Donna Kwong (piano), to open the season.  Widely regarded as the premier piano trio of their generation, the Claremont Trio is sought after for its thrillingly virtuosic, richly communicative performances.  First winners of the Kalichstein-Loredo-Robinson International Trio Award, and the only trio ever to win the Young Concert Artists International Auditions, The Claremont are praised for their artistic maturity, interpretive depth and exuberance.

Robert Belinic, guitarist
Recall how this gifted virtuoso left us breathless two years ago when he played to a full house, bringing the audience to its feet to applaud his artistry?  Robert Belinic returns to the Vanguard stage to delight us with his sensitive, versatile musicianship and irresistible personal charm. Belinic was the first guitarist to ever win the YCA Auditions in New York in 2002.  One review says: “Belinic is the real deal – a genius, a poet, dazzling.”

Max Brod Trio
Just wait until you hear this sensational new European ensemble!  Named for the Czech composer, writer and biographer, the Max Brod Trio is pleased to include Vanguard Concerts in their first United States tour.  When we heard their renditions of Beethoven , Dvorak and Schubert, we simply had to sign them up!  Once you’ve experienced the “exploding sound and brilliant performance” of violinist Petr Matejak, cellist Maximilian von Pfeil, and pianist Kerstin Strassburg, you will cherish these three new Vanguard friends!

Graffe Quartet, with Michiko Otaki, piano
The first concert in the spring of 2011 brings this top-ranking Czech string quartet of the younger generation. The Graffe was founded in 1997 by four students of the Brno Conservatory and the Janacek Academy, where they were already winning prizes.  For performing Leos Janacek’s quartets, they have twice received the Janacek Foundation Prize.  We are pleased to have our old friend Michiko Otaki returning to perform with them.

The Prima Trio
These appealing three artists bring Vanguard Concerts’ 49th season to a close with the uncommon blending of violin, piano and clarinet that delighted us with their youthful enthusiasm three years ago.  Since 2004, when they were still students at the Oberlin Conservatory, the Prima Trio has been winning prizes, including the 2007 Fischoff Chamber Music Competition Grand Prize. “We loved their energy” wrote a Washington, D.C music critic after a bravura Kennedy Center performance last year.
