Vanguard Legacy Concerts
at the University of Dayton
After 54 years at The DAI, the Vanguard Concerts series came to a close in 2016, but the tradition of Vanguard Concerts will live on at the University of Dayton!
University of Dayton’s ArtsLIVE program will open its 55th season with a new kind of program: the first Vanguard Legacy Concert, which will extend the Vanguard chamber music tradition initiated in 1962 at The Dayton Art Institute. Founded by Elana and Vincent Bolling, Vanguard was a widely admired series that brought hundreds of exceptional musicians to Dayton. Vanguard’s tradition of excellence will be continued under the auspices of the University’s ArtsLIVE series, which has served the University’s campus and community audiences with adventurous, professional arts events since 1961. Vanguard Legacy Concerts will continue to be curated by Elana Bolling.
The season-opening performance, by the Zorá String Quartet at 4 p.m. on Sunday, September 18, features one of chamber music’s newest ensembles. Formed just four years ago, the Zora Quartet has already won major prizes in several music competitions, including a 2015 gold medal at the prestigious Fishchoff National Chamber Music Competition. With its early success, the quartet is clearly living up to its name — zorá being the Bulgarian word for “dawn.”
Vanguard Legacy Concerts for the 2016-17 season include:
- Zorá String Quartet: 4 p.m., Sunday, September 18
- Prima Piano Trio: 4 p.m., Sunday, November 6
- Neave Piano Trio: 4 p.m., Sunday, March 19
All performances will be held in the intimate space of the Sears Recital Hall in Jesse Philips Humanities Center on the University campus. Parking is free, and Lot C is recommended. Lot C can be accessed via Evanston Avenue off Irving Avenue at the north end of Oakwood.
All ArtsLIVE tickets are $16; $12 for seniors and military; and $8 for students and youth. Tickets are available at the University Box Office in Kennedy Union: (937) 229-2545, or online through the ArtsLIVE website at go.udayton.edu/artslive. Tickets will also be sold at the door on the day of performance, subject to availability.
