WHAT DOES IT MEAN?
The Challenge of Contemporary Art

What does contemporary art tell us about our rapidly evolving society?
How do artists use methods, materials, ideas and concepts to create
thought-provoking art that challenges our beliefs and values?
How do artists engage us in the process of determining the
meaning of works of art?

On this tour, students will view artwork from the museum’s permanent
collection created with conventional and unconventional materials.
Included will be cutting-edge work by contemporary artists Mark Bradford, Jean-Michel Basquiat and Yoshitomo Nara and more. Students will engage in dialogue about art that expresses personal and cultural identity within the framework of community and society.

The tour will highlight the work of contemporary artist Mark Bradford,
who transforms nontraditional collage materials such as posters and
billboard remnants scavenged from city streets into abstract wall sized
collages. Building layer upon layer of these discarded materials,
Bradford then paints or sands away the elements to reveal a
visual commentary about diverse cultural communities and social issues.

In the workshop, students will collaborate and use discarded materials
referencing contemporary society to create a multi-layered collage.

Fees: $7 per student, maximum of 50 students; minimum of 20.
All charges will be billed by MUSE MACHINE.
