Access Art

Access Art makes art accessible to virtually everyone with a computer and Internet connection-including individuals with visual, hearing and mobility impairments whose experiences with the world of art may previously have been limited by their disabilities. Using the latest accessibility standards and techniques, Access Art provides alternative content in accessible formats so people with adaptive equipment may easily navigate through the site. Since many people with mobility impairments do not use a mouse, the site’s image enlargement system lets visitors zoom in on an image by using a keyboard or similar device.

Access Art allows visitors to select several tour options to explore the Dayton Art Institute’s collection. Guided Tours organize artwork according to selected themes, while Custom Tours are based on visitor’s own personal interest or preferences. Once a tour is chosen visitors may examine the art in a variety of ways:

  • Curitorial commentary summarizes the historical and artistic contexts of each piece.
  • Recorded remarks from the Art Institute Director, its former Senior curator and a modern artist will illuminate the objects from a variety of perspectives.
  • EyeSpyTM image server software allows visitors to see artwork in close detail.
  • Three-dimensional renderings of certain pieces display the works form any angle.

Look for new and expanded content as the museum continues to develop this interactive web-based tour.
