Access of Materials: library image

  • Books are arranged on the shelves using the Dewey
    Decimal system
  • Use the Card Catalog to search for books by author,
    title, or subject
  • Files – artist, museums, dealers, subject, history – will be pulled for you by library staff
  • Current Periodicals are shelved in the reading room;
    back issues are in storage and can be pulled by library staff

For general art reference information:

  • Grove Dictionary of Art
  • The Pelican art history series
  • Subject specific directories and encyclopedias

For information about The Dayton Art Institute's Collection:

  • Search the Rainbow File by artist, title of work, accession #, or country for published references to works in the museum’s collection

NOTE: We do not have information about all objects found in the museum collection!

For information about artists:

  • Directories of artists, for basic biographical information
  • Directories of signatures, symbols, and monograms
  • Artist Biographies Master Index
  • Grove Dictionary of Art
  • Check the card catalog under the artist’s name for books discussing an artist’s style and works
  • Artist files, to be pulled for you by library staff
