The Art Reference Library is the place to start when you’re doing research on artists, art history, and the DAI permanent collection. Library staff are available during open hours to assist with research, whether by personal visit, phone call, or email.

Docents will find information in a variety of formats:

Books
Docents may borrow books from the library for a period of two weeks, with one renewal. If you have not done so already, please contact the librarian about registering for borrowing privileges.

Online databases

Find out what books the library has from your home computer through our new online catalog. Click on LIBRARY CATALOG.

Grove Art Online is the premier art history database, with reliable and authoritative information on artists, art movements, and the culture surrounding both. Click at www.groveart.com. Contact the librarian for login and password.

AskArt is home to bibliographies and images of hundreds of American artists.
Click www.askart.com. Contact the librarian for login and password.

Periodicals

Stay up to date on happenings in the art world with the library’s current periodicals, such as Art in America, ARTnews, Apollo, Flash Art, International Review of African-American Art, Arts of Asia, and more.

Artist files

These 105 drawers of files on thousands of artists, with varying amounts of materials for each, may be the only source of information for some individuals.

DAI Archives

Need information on the museum building or history? Consult with the Museum Archivist, and you’ll get the answers.

Special exhibition materials

The librarian prepares a notebook of resources for most special exhibitions. You’ll find a copy in the library and in the Docent Lounge.
