Youth Programs for Winter 2008

Museum Saturdays and Museum Tuesdays
Join us for our longest running family program and explore the world of art through your young artist’s eyes! Together you will explore the museum’s galleries, hear stories, and make unique artwork using a variety of 2-D and 3-D materials in the newly re-designed Experiencenter Studio! Choose between Saturday or Tuesday classes to fit your schedule!


Art Shapes
Ages 3-5 with an adult partner
Discover the many shapes throughout the museum and hear stories all some very creative shapes! Then use your imagination to create your own artworks full of wonderful shapes. A variety of art-making materials will be introduced. Children will never look at shapes the same again!
Fee: $35 members per pair, $45 non-members per pair. All materials provided.

All Mixed Up in Color
Get ready to mix it up with color. Travel through the museum and be inspired by how different artists use their colors. Then children and their adult partners will use a wide variety of materials to create colorful pieces of art!

World Explorer
Are you ready for adventure? Explore the galleries and travel the world through the museum’s masterpieces. Children and their adult partners will hear exciting stories and return to the studio to make their own works of art using a variety of materials!

Creation Station

10:00 a.m. - 11:30 a.m. For ages 6-12
A multicultural extravaganza! Visit a different gallery and learn a new art making process each week. You will create 2-D and 3-D masterpieces related to the treasures you find in the museum. Each session has a new emphasis with different art activities. Fee: $35 members, $45 non-members. All materials provided.


Painting with the Masters
Explore the museum in search of paintings from different times and listen to stories about famous painters like Monet and others! Back in the studio, you will be inspired to re-create these pieces in a variety of different colorful paints and other materials with your own style!

Polymer Clay
Instructor: Tricia Calvert

10:00 - 11:30 a.m
Work with colorful polymer clay to create unique pieces of miniature sculpture to wear! Learn how to mix colors and sculpt animal pendants, rings and more!

Saturday Morning Cartoons
Instructor: Traci Spencer

10:00 - 11:30 a.m.
Create your own characters and draw like a superhero. Visit the galleries and sketch from artwork that will inspire your cartoon characters. In the studio, create your own comics using a variety of graphic drawing techniques such as sketching, penciling, inking and toning!

After School Club

4:00 - 6:00 p.m. For ages 6-12
Explore the museum’s galleries, learn interesting facts about art in the Permanent Collection and special exhibitions and create original works of art. Participants are encouraged to create art based on their own experiences as they develop a better understanding and appreciation art and how it impacts their lives. Fee: $40 members, $50 non-members. All materials provided.


Passport to China
Discover the symbols found in Chinese art and hear Chinese folk stories.
Then create gallery-inspired art work in clay, paint and many other exciting materials!
Fee: $40 members, $50 non-members. All materials provided.

My Museum

4:00 - 6:00 p.m.
Explore the highlights of the museum and listen to stories about the artists. Back in the studio, you will be inspired to re-create these pieces in a variety of materials with your own style!

Experience Printmaking
Instructor: Matt Burgy

4:00 - 6:00 p.m.
View the many prints throughout the museum and then experience the world of printmaking starting with painterly monoprints. You will learn how to use the press to make a relief print and more!

Registering for Classes
