Adult Programs 2008


Painting for the Novice
Instructor: Karen Lowry
Learn to create a painting in acrylics from start to finish. You will learn to stretch your own canvas, gesso, layout your composition, choose and mix colors, and create depth and realism in this class.
Ages 16+
$70 members, $80 non-members. Participant supplies own materials.

Recommended materials:

Acrylic Paint:
Karen recommends purchasing a high-end brand of acrylic paint like Golden
cadmium yellow light
cadmium red medium
lamp black
titanium white
ultramarine blue

Brushes: A variety is good. Numbers that denote brush sizes vary with the name brand of the brushes one is using or buying. A 6 in one brand could be a different size than a 6 in another. It is generally better to have a larger brush than a smaller one. Be sure you are using brushes made for acrylic if you are using acrylic paints, and brushes made for oils if are using oil paints. Make sure they are long handled.
A good place to start is to have at least:
one 6 round
one 12 round
one 16 round
one 6 flat
one 12 flat
one 18 flat
Canvas
Two 24 x 36 canvas boards or stretched canvas.
Other items:
A palette, or palette paper with support
palette knife
paper towels or rags
two water containers

 


Painting the Figure
Instructor: Sandi Sharp
In this class, learn to paint the nude with realism and expression. Students will develop strong foundational skills as well as explore personal expression and interpretation in painting the figure. Paint from long poses, allowing time to complete each painting from start to finish. Study both male and female models. All levels of experience are encouraged to attend.
Ages 18 +
Fee: $130 members, $145 nonmembers. Participant supplies own materials. Oils or acrylics recommended. Recommended materials:
Paint
white*
black*
yellow ochre*
burnt sienna
raw umber
burnt umber*
raw sienna
cadmium red light*
cadmium yellow light*
alizarin crimson*
permanent green light
At least one blue: One Blue: Thalo (phthalocyaine) Prussian blue or French ultramarine blue*

Canvas
A 24 x 36 canvas board or stretched canvas for the first class. At least four canvases will be used in total; two sessions per pose, one canvas per pose. Canvas size for the remaining sessions will be discussed at the first class.

Turpinoid odorless if you are using oil paint.


Outside the Box: Plein Air Painting in the Dayton Countryside
Instructor: Greg Dearth

For ages 16+
Back by popular demand, but with new locations to discover! Ever wanted to learn how to paint landscapes on location in the tradition of the plein air school? This class is for you! Learn tips and tricks for oil painting outdoors including best color, composition and brushwork techniques. Each week class will meet at a different beautiful vista around the Dayton countryside to experience a rich palette of spring colors. In the event of bad weather, class will be held in the museum studios and instruction on painting from photographs will be provided. $70 members, $80 non-members. Participant supplies own materials and outdoor easel.

large bottle of water for clean-up and drinking

Fiction, Fine Art and Fun

Fiction, Fine Art and Fun is the Miami Valley’s only book club dedicated to art-related fiction.
