The Art Institute's
collection of glass is focused primarily on American and European
glass from the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. The glasshouses
of Salviati & C., Artisti Barovier, and Fratelli Toso represent
the virtuosity of the Venetian glass industry. From France and Bohemia,
the glasshouses of Emile Gallé, René Lalique, Daum
Frères, and the Johann Lötz -Witwe Company are represented
by quintessential Art Nouveau and Art Deco decorative glass. Highlights
in the collection include examples of Louis Comfort Tiffany's inventive
Art Nouveau favrile glass. In addition, there are superb examples
from the studio glass movement, a group of individual artists who
first emerged in America in the 1960s and who did not work with
commercial glass firms. Artists include Harvey Littleton, Dominic
Labino, Dale Chihuly, Toots Zynsky, Lino Tagliapietra, William Morris,
Tom Chapman, and Dante Marioni. |
