The Art Institute's collection of glass is focused primarily on American and European glass from the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. The glasshouses of Salviati & C., Artisti Barovier, and Fratelli Toso represent the virtuosity of the Venetian glass industry. From France and Bohemia, the glasshouses of Emile Gallé, René Lalique, Daum Frères, and the Johann Lötz -Witwe Company are represented by quintessential Art Nouveau and Art Deco decorative glass. Highlights in the collection include examples of Louis Comfort Tiffany's inventive Art Nouveau favrile glass. In addition, there are superb examples from the studio glass movement, a group of individual artists who first emerged in America in the 1960s and who did not work with commercial glass firms. Artists include Harvey Littleton, Dominic Labino, Dale Chihuly, Toots Zynsky, Lino Tagliapietra, William Morris, Tom Chapman, and Dante Marioni.
