The
Art Institute’s collection of earlier European art is small
but significant. Works in this gallery date from as early as 1300,
including Italian gold-ground paintings of the early Renaissance,
northern European stone sculpture dating from 1300 to 1500, and
Flemish tapestries. Their subjects include scenes from the life
of Christ, portraiture, and stories drawn from classical antiquity.
Some objects were probably intended for churches, but others were
for domestic settings, and one was even part of a wedding chest
for a wealthy bride. Paintings by Pier Francesco Bissolo, François
Clouet, and Hans Schäufelein are among the works on view in
this gallery.
