Americans
in the first decades of the 20th century wrestled with the wide-ranging
effects of increased modernization. Many artists felt that if the
world around them was in flux, then the art they created should
deal with this. In literature, visual arts, psychology, science
and philosophy, realism was questioned. First suggested by European
artists, alternatives like Post-Impressionism, Fauvism and Cubism
proposed new ways of representing the world. |
