Art
historians typically define 20th century art as a succession of
well-defined movements from Cubism to Pop Art. From the late 1940s
through the 1960s, Gesture and Color Field painting were the two
competing trends in abstract art. Since 1970, numerous styles have
emerged, characterizing this time period by a variety of imagery,
style, media and subject matter. Artists have used new and old media
to challenge conventional wisdom about the world and expectations
about art.
